National Safety Month 2024: Slips, Trips and Falls (Week 4)

Slips, trips and falls are among the leading causes of workplace injuries and fatalities. As we conclude National Safety Month, it’s crucial to focus on this persistent challenge to ensure safety in the workplace and beyond.

Statistics from the National Safety Council highlight the severity of the issue, with falls accounting for a significant number of days away from work, job restrictions, or transfers (DART) cases. Notably, falls to a lower level are the third leading cause of workplace fatalities, while falls on the same level are the fourth leading cause of DART cases. Among older adults, falls have increased by 60% in deaths and 20% in emergency department visits over the past decade, according to the CDC.

Preventive Strategies from Wisconsin Safety Council:

  1. Maintain Clean and Dry Surfaces: Regularly clean spills, mark wet areas, and use absorbent materials like mats or rugs to enhance traction. Promptly repair damaged or uneven flooring. In Wisconsin, winter poses additional risks. Ensure outdoor ice is salted and indoor areas are kept dry.
  2. Keep Walkways Clear: Keep work spaces clutter-free, avoid leaving objects, cables, or cords in walkways or on stairs, and ensure all areas are well-lit. Be aware about uneven surfaces and dimly-lit areas, adjusting walking speed and taking extra caution in potentially dangerous areas.
  3. Wear Proper Footwear: Choose footwear that provides sufficient support, comfort and slip-resistant soles.
  4. Use Handrails and Grab Bars: Utilize handrails and grab bars in stairwells, corridors, and bathrooms. These assistive devices offer stability and support, reducing the likelihood of falls.
  5. Practice Safe Walking Techniques: Be mindful of your walking technique, especially in areas prone to slips and trips. Take smaller steps, maintain a balanced and upright posture and keep your hands free for better balance and reaction time.
  6. Educate and Train: Promote a culture of safety by providing training and education on slip, trip and fall prevention. Teach employees, family members and community members about the risks and strategies to mitigate them effectively.
  7. Report and Address Hazards: Encourage prompt reporting of any potential hazards or near-miss incidents. Establish a system that allows individuals to communicate concerns and ensure that identified hazards are promptly addressed and resolved.

While slips, trips and falls are common causes of workplace injuries, they are often preventable. By being observant and proactive, we can significantly reduce the risk of these incidents and create a safer environment for everyone. Stay mindful, follow these preventive strategies, and promote a culture of safety in your workplace and community.

Through Wisconsin Safety Council training courses like Job Safety Analysis (JSA), Safety Training Methods, and Principles of Occupation Safety and Health-4th Edition, safety workers learn how not to only control operating hazards but also promote a safer, more efficient workplace.
